  Newsweek: Never Mind Iran

Newsweek tells us to just ignore that “tough talk” coming from Iranian “president” Ahmadinejad—you know, when he called for the destruction of Israel? yes, that “tough talk”—because they don’t really mean it. In fact, the mullahs are quite moderate, and getting more so.

Nov. 10, 2005 - Is Tehran becoming more extremist? An anti-Israel rant last month by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad—in which he called for the Jewish state to be “wiped off the map”—led many policy-makers in Washington and Europe to suggest that such a shift had indeed taken place. But in fact there is some evidence that the new Iranian leader was speaking out of turn. Ahmadinejad’s rhetoric actually violated a secret policy directive in place in Tehran for a decade, which barred such inflammatory calls for the destruction of Israel, sources tell Newsweek . There are also signs that this policy of moderation has been reaffirmed in the aftermath of Ahmadinejad’s Oct. 26 remarks, which elicited worldwide condemnation.
